What does ABPS board certification mean?
Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) represents one of the most rigorous credentials a plastic surgeon can earn in the United States.
The ABPS is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the organization that establishes nationally recognized standards for physician specialty certification.
Earning ABPS certification requires far more than completing medical school or being licensed to practice medicine. Candidates must complete extensive accredited surgical training, meet strict eligibility and professional standards, and successfully pass both comprehensive written and oral examinations covering the full breadth of plastic surgery.
The oral certification process is particularly demanding: surgeons must first pass the written examination, submit a nine-month record of their own operative cases, undergo review for the diversity, complexity, and volume of those cases, and then defend selected cases during a multi-session oral examination before experienced board examiners.
ABPS certification therefore represents an independent evaluation of a surgeon’s training, knowledge, clinical judgment, operative experience, and professional standards—not simply membership in an organization or use of the term “board-certified.”
